Procedure details
Breast augmentation is a highly individualized procedure that starts with precise planning. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Aline Rau will review your anatomy and goals and recommend options designed for a balanced, natural-looking result.
Your Options with Breast Augmentation
Options may include:
Implant types (silicone or saline), chosen by size, width, and profile
Incision placement is typically discreetly placed in the natural fold or along the areola in select cases
Implant positioning above or below the muscle, based on your anatomy, tissue coverage, and lifestyle
Some patients also combine breast augmentation with liposuction for overall contouring, depending on goals.
Choosing Your Implants
When it comes to breast implants, we believe each patient is unique, and so is our approach.
Breast implant selection isn’t about a cup size. The placement is tailored to fit your frame and match your anatomy.
Dr. Aline Rau plans your breast augmentation based on measurements such as breast base width, tissue coverage, and skin quality, then recommends implant options that match your goals.
Your plan may include the following:
Implant size, style, and shape
Implant material (silicone, saline)
Implant profile (Low, Moderate, High, Ultra-High)
Implant Position(above or below the muscle)
Implant Longevity: May require replacement over time
Incisions
Most commonly, the incision is placed in the fold under the breast (inframammary). Dr. Aline Rau uses this approach in most cases.
Alternatives and Add-On Options
Not every patient needs or wants implants. Depending on your anatomy and goals, Dr. Aline Rau may also discuss:
Fat transfer to add subtle volume using your own fat
alloClae™ as an alternative volume option for select patients who want shape and fullness without implants
These options can be performed on their own or combined with breast augmentation when appropriate.
Recovery & Aftercare
| Timeline | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Day of Surgery | You will need someone to care for you for 24-hours. Rest and/or take a nap after your surgery but plan to do some light walking around the house to get your blood flow moving. To prevent stiffness gentle arm lifts are encouraged. Drink plenty of water. |
| Days 2 – 7 | Continue regular walking but you will need to avoid all other exercise and direct sun exposure. Your surgical bra will need to be worn at all times. You will be able to take short showers. |
| Weeks 1 – 4 | You'll be advised to do gentle breast massages to help implants settle. You will still need to avoid aany weight or resistance based exercise. Around the second week you should be able to sleep without a bra, apply scar gel to your incisions and protect incisions with SPF 30+. |
| Week 6 | If approved by Dr. Aline Rau, you may begin easing into your regular fitness routine, though upper body strength may take time to fully return. If you prefer, you can wear underwire bras at this time. Initial tightness, discomfort, and skin tingling typically resolve during this period. |
| First Year & Long-Term Results | Maintain healthy nutrition and sun protection. A one-year follow-up is recommended to evaluate your permanent results and scar refinement. Your scars will continue to refine and generally fade to fine lines after one year. |
Are you a suitable candidate?
Breast augmentation is ideal for non-smoking women in good health who:
Desire fuller, more symmetrical breasts.
Seek to restore volume lost due to aging or pregnancy.
Have realistic expectations about the outcomes.
What our patients say
Your Questions About Breast Augmentation, Answered
-
“Natural” is less about a specific cup size and more about what fits your frame. During your consultation with our Board-Certified plastic surgeon Dr. Aline Rau, the plan is built around your proportions first, then implant options that match your measurements.
-
Most implant decisions come down to shape details, like profile (how much projection you want) and cohesivity (gel cohesivity contributes to the feel and shape of the breast).
Softer gels tend to move more naturally, while high cohesivity implants feel firmer. -
Beneath-fascia (subfascial) can mean a shorter recovery. Under-the-muscle (submuscular) placement reduces the risk of rippling but may take longer to recover.
-
Costs vary depending on implant vs. fat transfer, facility/anesthesia fees, and whether you’re combining procedures (like a lift). You’ll receive a personalized quote during your consultation.
-
Most people return to light activity within a few days, but you’ll want to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for about 4–6 weeks.
It’s also normal for implants to sit high at first and gradually settle over the first month or so. You may feel tightness, and lymphatic massage can help relieve it.
-
Your breast implants will not get smaller when you lose weight; however, weight loss can impact the overall appearance.
-
If your main concern is volume, implants alone may be enough. If you also have sagging or a lower nipple position, a lift may be recommended.
-
Most commonly, the incision is placed in the fold under the breast (inframammary). Dr. Aline Rau uses this approach in most cases.
-
Yes. A combined approach can use implants for primary volume, with fat transfer to refine contour, soften transitions, and improve symmetry.
-
If you want a more predictable, noticeable increase in volume, implants are usually the most reliable option.
Fat transfer can create a softer, more subtle enhancement, but results vary based on fat survival.
If you’re looking for an alternative to implants or don’t have enough fat, alloClae™ may be a great option.
